The fraternity Phi Kappa Psi said it will pursue legal action against The Rolling Stone magazine for their story, which was proven to be faked. But, the major concern is whether journalism has adopted a “narrative-first” approach with verifying the facts, as if that isn’t breaking news.
The bottom line? The Rolling Stone didn’t verify or fact check Sabrina Rubin Erdely’s story, her source “Jackie” and went ahead in publishing a false gang rape story. The magazine apologized for not checking their facts, but is that enough? The fictitious story did not help the actual issue of rampant alcoholism on college campuses and the reality of rapes and sexual assaults (although the 1-in-5 stat has been debunked).
