Russia and their rebels forced Ukrainian troops to withdraw from Debaltseve after launching a two-day assault, which violated the terms of a cease-fire reached last week. The city links railroads between two major rebel cities of Donetsk and Luhansk.
It is a great read by the Los Angeles Times, and depressing as well, seeing the sacrifice of brave Ukrainians against Russian troops (at least that’s what soldiers on the ground are saying, due to the military precision of the rebel forces).
Ukrainian government troops lost the Donetsk airport to the pro-Russia rebels, who are reportedly armed by Russia, and could easily lose the rest of their recent gains in eastern Ukraine if no military aid is provided.
Ukrainian government troops beat back the pro-Russia rebels to regain territory lost some time ago, returning it to the status quo as negotiations and peace talks resume.
The airport itself is in shambles in Donetsk, where government troops are holed up and surrounded by pro-Russia rebels, the latter having consistently violated ceasefire agreements the past several months.
WASHINGTON — The Ukrainian central government accused pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine of trying to break the ceasefire agreement. The rebels denied the allegations. Reuter reported the Ukrainian government said the rebels were being reinforced by “Russian mercenaries” and have increased shelling their troops’ positions. The European Union will discuss possible punishments for Russia, but […]
WASHINGTON — The Ukrainian government held an emergency meeting between their president Petro Poroshenko and his security chiefs after the rebel-held eastern provinces voted to align with Russia. Reuters reported that the elections were disapproved of by Europe, U.S. and the Ukrainian government. Russia disapproved of the latest Ukrainian elections, which shored up Poroshenko’s support […]
WASHINGTON — After shelling on government army positions at the Donetsk airport, at least one Swiss Red Cross worker was killed when a shell exploded near the Red Cross building in the city. Reuters reported that the Ukrainian government and the pro-Russia rebels blamed each other for the death. The shell exploded, left a crater […]
WASHINGTON — The current Ukrainian ceasefire is close to being broken by the pro-Russia rebels, which is tenuous as of late. Reuters reported up to seven Ukrainian soldiers were killed in shelling at the Donestk international airport, even with a ceasefire in place. The soldiers were killed when shelling hit their armored vehicle at the […]
WASHINGTON — Both sides of the Ukrainian civil war agreed to a ceasefire yesterday, which could lead to the partitioning of the country between Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine blames Russia for starting a second front in the civil war to help the pro-Russian rebels. Reuters said the ceasefire did not stop all hostilities, as reports […]
