Mr. Dorrance Smith
Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs

Dear Mr. Smith:

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has recognized that the most important battles in the war on radical Islam are being fought in the newsrooms of the U.S. and foreign media. In a frank and honest assessment of where we stand internationally, Rumsfeld said in a speech that while the terrorists “have skillfully adapted to fighting wars in today’s media age,” those committed to freedom and democracy have not. One of our big challenges, as you know, is combating the influence of Al-Jazeera and its new propaganda arm, Al-Jazeera International, an English-language venture targeting English-speaking Muslims in the U.S. and other countries. What will the U.S. do about that?
