The Honorable Karen Hughes
Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy
and Public Affairs
U.S. Department of State
2201 C Street, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20520

Dear Under Secretary Hughes:

The Department’s decision to sponsor an “Edward R. Murrow Journalism Program” may please actor George Clooney but it does a disservice to history and the truth. Murrow ignored the communists that Senator Joseph McCarthy tried to expose. In fact, one of Murrow’s friends, Laurence Duggan, was an identified Soviet spy. The State Department should have honored John Barron with a journalism program named after him. He was the late Reader’s Digest journalist who wrote many articles and books on the activities of Soviet KGB agents. You should invite journalist M. Stanton Evans, a McCarthy expert, to speak to the State Department and set the record straight about the communists that penetrated our government during that critical time.
