Dear Mr. Thomas:

You have tried to explain how Newsweek sparked anti-American riots, including 16 dead and more than 100 wounded, by publishing an unsubstantiated allegation that U.S. interrogators flushed a Koran down a toilet. We were intrigued to discover that you teach a journalism course at Harvard University and that one of the topics includes “the ethical, moral and practical issues that recur in news delivery.” What role did you have in approving the bogus item? Will publication of this story serve as an example of unethical journalism practices in your Harvard course?
