Dear Governor Dean:

You have criticized President Bush for too much secrecy in government. But you have sealed many of your own records for 10 years. One paper, the Daily Camera of Boulder, Colorado, noted that your first response—that you were doing what George W. Bush had done as governor of Texas—was inaccurate and weak. The next day, the paper said, you tried out “a different and equally unconvincing explanation”—that you wanted to protect the privacy of AIDS patients. In fact, their identities are already shielded under the law. It said your “lame attempts” to explain away the sealed records have compromised your credibility. It looks like you weren’t joking when you said the material may be embarrassing to your campaign. What are you hiding?
