Dear Mr. Rather:

One reason for the decline in your viewership is the drumbeat about the problems facing our soldiers in Iraq. This reached a new low on July 21 when your correspondent David Hawkins interviewed three terrorist killers of American troops. The interview was arranged by a gun-runner and depicted the terrorists as Iraqi patriots. This followed a July 10 broadcast that was so slanted against the Bush administration that Washington Post columnist David Broder described it as part of a “Black Thursday” of negative news. We are a nation at war and believe that demoralizing newscasts are not welcomed either by our troops or those of us who support them. Please tell us you will reverse course. You may find you will pick up some viewers as a result.
