His Excellency
Yuri Ushakov
Ambassador of the Russian Federation
2650 Wisconsin Ave., N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20007

Dear Ambassador Ushakov:

I was disappointed to learn that you have not responded positively to a request that you transmit some 500 signed petitions addressed to President Putin requesting that he find the answers to questions posed over 10 years ago by Sen. Jesse Helms about the fate of the 269 people aboard KAL 007. There is evidence that suggests that many of them survived and have been held in captivity. If that is not true, then the question is what happened to all the bodies. If it is true, the survivors should be set free.

Sen. Helms has endorsed the efforts of the International Committee for the Rescue of the KAL 007 Survivors to get answers to his questions. The dissolution of the Soviet Union should make it easy to find the answers. Doing so would earn President Putin the gratitude of the relatives and the millions of us who sympathize with them. Please let him know how we feel.
