Dear Mr. Shapirov

A widely reported Pew poll has shown that the public's rating of the media has risen along with the perception that the news media are standing up for America. There is a lesson in this for your journalists. Uwe Siemon-Netto, a German reporter who covered Vietnam, said, "The Vietnam war was the first war in history that was won by one side essentially via the media of the other side." The coverage of the Tet offensive, which even the Vietcong said was a defeat portrayed as their victory by our media, is an example. Peter Braestrup put the evidence in his book, Big Story. An NBC News producer saw that they got it wrong and tried to get it corrected. His boss, Robert J. Northshield, refused. He said the public perceived it as a defeat and therefore it was a defeat. January, the 34th anniversary of the start of this offensive, would be a good time for NBC to finally correct the record.
