To the Editor:
Recently the NIH reported a study that had found that condoms may not reduce the spread of most STDs. It said they protect against HIV, the deadliest STD, among men and women, but are less likely to protect gay men. This study didnít get the attention it deserved from the media. ABC was the only TV network to report it, and most newspapers did not give it big play. With about a third of the population between ages 14 and 65 infected with an STD the chances of contracting a disease are high among those who engage in risky behavior. The report shows that too much reliance has been placed on condoms making sex safe. Our young people need to be informed that condoms do not guarantee protection against most STDs and that they provide little protection against some. The media and schools need to make this clear.
