Dear Mr. Borders:

You have rejected AIM's criticism of Jane Perlez's reporting from North Korea last October, saying that you believe she did "quite a marvelous job." Dr. Norbert Vollertsen, a German doctor then living in North Korea, says he offered to show the reporters accompanying Secretary Albright what life there is like for the ordinary people. A Washington Post reporter accepted his offer. Jane Perlez did not. The Post reported the extreme hardships endured by the ordinary people. Perlez reported on the department store patronized by the elite and the marvelous lunch she had with North Korean officials. Is that what made her story marvelous? Time's Jan. 22 international edition devoted 4 pages to Dr. Vollertsen and his expulsion at the end of last year. Has the Times ever told the story of his18 months in North Korea?
