Accuracy in Media

One would assume that the decrease in illegal immigration, as a study from the Pew Research Center pointed out, would be due to President Trump’s tough immigration rhetoric and policy proposals. The Wall Street Journal correctly stated, “The census data used in the Pew report were recorded before Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign gained steam and so were unrelated to any Trump effect.”

However, it appears that immigration went down in the first three months of 2016, Obama’s last year as president, and the Pew Research Center did not make any inferences or suggestions of why that was.

Specifically, the Pew study found the following:

  • Illegal immigration levels are as low as 2009 levels at 11 million,
  • The number of Mexicans leaving Mexico to illegally immigrate to America is shrinking; the first time since 2005 when Mexico did not make up over 50% of the illegal immigration population,
  • More non-Mexicans were apprehended by the U.S. government than Mexican immigrants in 2016,
  • More illegal immigrants are living with their children who were born in the U.S.
