Costs go up over time, and the inaugurations are expensive due to increased security costs as the years go on. But, to say that Trump’s inauguration is overly expensive is ignoring how it cost $30 million more to do Trump’s inauguration compared to Obama’s in 2009.
ABC News in 2009 noted that during the Great Recession, the inauguration of Obama cost $170 million. But, the party bill for Obama was more than George W. Bush:
And then there is the party bill.
“We have a budget of roughly $45 million, maybe a little bit more,” said Linda Douglass, spokeswoman for the inaugural committee.
That’s more than the $42.3 million in private funds spent by President Bush’s committee in 2005 or the $33 million spent for Bill Clinton’s first inaugural in 1993.
CBS News’ headline was misleading in that it didn’t highlight how expensive Obama’s inauguration was, “By the numbers: Donald Trump’s $200 million inauguration”. Also, the article didn’t note how expensive Obama’s 2009 inauguration was.
