Accuracy in Media

A new poll from BuzzFeed News and Maru/Blue shows that almost half of millennial Democrats say they identify as a socialist or democratic socialist.

The 48 percent that say they would call themselves a democratic socialist or socialist is slightly more than the 39 percent who said they identified as neither.

Among Republican millennials, 23 percent said they would call themselves a democratic socialist or socialist, and 71 percent said neither.

Nearly twice as many millennials said they at least leaned Democrat versus Republican, by a margin of 48 to 25 percent.

Nineteen percent of those surveyed identified as independent.

The most prominent socialist is former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who attracted tens of thousands of millennials to his campaign and paved the way for Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s shocking primary election upset against longtime New York Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley in June.

The poll identified millennials as between the ages of 22 and 37, surveying 1,006 randomly selected respondents online between Sept. 21-24.  The results have a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
