Accuracy in Media

President Donald Trump, while vacationing at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, declared that he signed more bills into law than previous presidents. The media jumped on this claim and correctly pointed out that Trump’s claim was false. Here’s what President Trump said:

“Harry Truman had more legislative approvals than any other president and — a record long held. And we beat him on legislative approvals, for which I get no credit.”

CNN, NPR and Politico cited reports from GovTrack and the Harry Truman presidential library to refute Trump’s claim (Trump referred to Truman in making his claim). Here’s what NPR reported:

  • Trump has signed 96 bills into law
  • Barack Obama signed 124 bills
  • George W. Bush signed 109
  • Harry Truman signed about 240 bills
