Accuracy in Media

A professional football player and another person were killed by an immigrant who was driving a car while drunk.

Indianapolis Colts defensive player Edwin Jackson was feeling sick, which led to his Uber driver Jeffrey Monroe to pull the car to the side of the road. When the driver pulled over, he and Jackson were struck by a car and killed by an immigrant from Guatemala.

Manuel Orrego-Savala was in the country illegally and hit Jackson and Monroe early Monday morning, killing both men. Orrego-Savala has been deported twice but returned to the country illegally each time.

Federal immigration authorities placed a hold on him following his arrest, meaning they have requested local police hand him over for prosecution.

Despite this example of failed immigration policy, the media danced around the immigration status of Orrego-Savala. CNN called the man an undocumented immigrant. ESPN could only say this in their headline: “Colts’ Edwin Jackson killed by driver illegally in U.S.” The Washington Post’s headline read, “Man accused of killing Colts’ Edwin Jackson was in the U.S. illegally.”
