Accuracy in Media

The race for cities and states to land Amazon’s second headquarters, known as Amazon HQ2, is on, and many politicians are clamoring and posturing for Amazon’s attention to sell the corporate giant on their locality, economy and workers.

The media gobbled up every hint and announcement, but have consistently ignored the ramifications of these concessions for an international corporation.

The media often rails against corporations and their officers, but with Amazon, much of the media coverage is full of excitement and anticipation. For example, Mashable wondered if Amazon employee searches for northern Virginia meant that HQ2 will be awarded to the region.

But, Generation Opportunity, a millennial-focused non-profit grassroots organization that focuses on free-market issues, released a digital ad critical of the race for Amazon HQ2.

The media ran with the ad, changing their positive spin and pointing out that corporate welfare (or politicians’ concessions to corporations) is not a winning proposition for taxpayers, as the likes of Amazon are profitable and bring fewer jobs than promised.
