In a wide-ranging interview Friday, former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said she doesn’t want to run again in 2020 but would “like to be president.”
Clinton made her comments during an interview with Recode Decode podcast host Kara Swisher.
“Do you want to run again?” Swisher asked Clinton.
“No,” Clinton said, then, after a pause added, “Well, I’d like to be president.”
“I think, hopefully, when we have a Democrat in the Oval Office in January of 2021, there’s going to be so much work to be done,” Clinton said. “We have confused everybody in the world, including ourselves. We have confused our friends and our enemies. They have no idea what the United States stands for, what we’re likely to do, what we think is important.”
“The work would be work I feel very well prepared for, having been in the Senate for eight years, having been a diplomat in the State Department,” Clinton said. “It’s just going to be a lot of heavy lifting.”
“Will you be doing any of that lifting?” Swisher asked.
“I have no idea, but I’m not going to even think about that until we get through this Nov. 6 election,” she said. “But I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure we have a Democrat in the White House come January 2021.”
Swisher tried to get Clinton to give her an idea of which of the numerous potential Democratic candidates she favored at this point but Clinton didn’t bite.
“I’m not going to handicap the race before anyone actually gets into it,” Clinton said. “We may have as many as 15, 20 candidates. That’s a big group to try and sort itself out.”
