Jerry Falwell Jr., President and Chancellor of Liberty University, says that the media has misreported his school’s policy as being anti-Democrat. Liberty University recently decided to revoke funding for the school’s College Democrats.
The Washington Post reported this morning that “The club, which has about 30 members, will no longer be able to use Liberty’s name, hold on-campus meetings or be eligible for student activities money.” The Chancellor said the College Democrats can still meet on campus.
“When they formed they promised to be pro-life, pro-family and since then they’ve supported several candidates who were not pro-life or pro-family and so we encouraged students to go back and to find a pro-life Democratic group that they can be affiliated with and then we can endorse them again,” Falwell Jr. told this correspondent. “It’s not the fact that they’re Democrat that’s the problem, it’s the fact that they are supporting positions that are at odds with the University’s mission and so we’ve uh, I think we’ve finally gotten that message out to all the media…”
He said that “there are plenty of Democrats that are pro-life and they just need to find those groups and affiliate with them” and that characterizing the school as opposing the Democratic party was “totally false.”
The May 15 email from Mark Hine, VP for Student Affairs, as reprinted by the Washington Post, stated:
“Even though this club may not support the more radical planks of the democratic party, the democratic party is still the parent organization of the club on campus. The Democratic Party Platform is contrary to the mission of LU and to Christian doctrine (supports abortion, federal funding of abortion, advocates repeal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, promotes the “LGBT” agenda, Hate Crimes, which include sexual orientation and gender identity, socialism, etc). The candidates this club supports uphold the Platform and implement it. The candidates supported are directly contrary to the mission of LU. By using LU or Liberty University and Democrat in the name, the two are associated and the goals of both run in opposite directions.”
