Democratic strategist Lis Smith pointed out on MSNBC that the Democratic Party’s ideological purity test on abortion could make the Democratic Party the party of coastal elites, not a party that could win across the United States. In other words, the 2016 election could happen over and over again for the Democrats.
She said:
“My concern is that if we impose these purity tests, that we will purify ourselves into irrelevance and we will purify our party to the point where we can only win elections in states that touch salt water, and I think that is not the path forward for Democrats”
Smith has evolved from the 2012 presidential election, where she criticized then-GOP candidate Mitt Romney for his shift on the pro-life-versus-pro-abortion-issue.
