Democratic politicians referred to the Republican tax reform law as a potential apocalypse and one that socks the middle class and working Americans. However, the results of the law conflict with those statements, where up to one hundred companies announced one-time employee bonuses, increases in their minimum wage, hiring efforts, and increases in matching 401(k) contributions.
For starters, Claire McCaskill, Missouri Democratic Senator who is facing re-election in 2018, said the following about the announcements:
“Listen, I think it’s great when companies want to give workers bonuses,” Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) said Tuesday. “That doesn’t change the reality of the numbers. It’s a debt-inducing, make-rich-people-richer tax bill that in the long run is not going to be helpful to the vast majority of people in my state that are sitting around the kitchen table trying to figure out how [to] come out even at the end of the month.”
