According to CNN’s Chris Cillizza, President Donald Trump was “irrelevant” in the negotiations leading up to the government shutdown early Saturday morning. President Trump met with House Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D.-N.Y.) on Friday to try to clear the air on why the Democratic Party minority would force a government shutdown.

No deal was finalized in their meeting, but Cillizza said the lack of any deal made Trump “irrelevant” because of his lack of “any sort of deep policy knowledge on this issue and he is uninterested in educating himself on the finer points of the policy debates at work in the shutdown in order to have any sort of real influence over the way forward.”

But the meeting illustrated that Trump is at least partly relevant, because they were able to go over key negotiation points over political demands.
