CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker, whose job was thought to be in jeopardy once the AT&T-Time Warner merger was completed will actually be staying on to lead the network according to news reports.

Zucker, who was hired in 2013, has revived CNN’s fortunes to a degree, though the former king of cable news has seen ratings soften in recent months as evidenced by a 25 percent drop in May compared to last year.

Despite Zucker’s efforts to compete with Fox News and MSNBC, CNN has struggled to find the right mix of programming and has lagged both networks badly, but it remains profitable and the Time Warner brass apparently thinks that Zucker is the right man to lead the fight against President Trump’s attacks on the network.

CNN is averaging 989,000 viewers in primetime and 334,000 in the all-important 25-54 demographic, trailing Fox News Channel’s 2.503 million viewers and 497,000 demographic, and MSNBC’s 1.853 million viewers and 392,000 demographic, respectively.
