Accuracy in Media

A rape which occurred in a Maryland high school bathroom, where a 14-year-old girl was raped by two classmates (one of whom is an illegal immigrant i.e. illegal aliens), grabbed national headlines. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said he was “outraged by the brutal and violent rape” and White House spokesman Sean Spicer called it, “horrendous, horrible and disgusting” in a press conference this week. Spicer blamed failed immigration policy for the tragedy.

But the question remains, how has the national liberal media covered this? Some of the headlines read “undocumented” instead of “illegal aliens” or “illegal immigrants.” ABC News and CBS News declined to use any of those phrases in their pieces, which were Associated Press wires. Let’s take a look:

  • ABC News (from Associated Press wire): 2 male students charged with raping girl in school bathroom
  • CNN: Undocumented immigrant accused of raping classmate
  • NBC News only ran a piece on the local Washington D.C. affiliate’s website.
  • CBS News (also from Associated Press): 2 students charged with raping girl in high school bathroom
