As Countries Imprison Journalists, Committee Accuses Trump of Undermining Press Freedom

The Committee to Protect Journalists [1], in response to President Donald Trump’s announced “Most Dishonest & Corrupt Media Awards of the Year,” claimed that the American president will be the winner of its “Overall Achievement in Undermining Global Press Freedom Award.”

In their summary of why the U.S. president deserved the award, the committee cited authoritarian leaders who actually repress and oppress their citizens’ freedom of speech and imprison journalists, such as China’s Xi, Turkey’s Erdogan and Egypt’s Sisi.

Recently, two Reuters reporters appeared in court and were accused [2] of the crime of attempting to obtain state secrets in the country of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma). Why were they in court? They were reporting on the country’s Rohingya Muslim refugee crisis and a massacre of Rohingya Muslims by the Myanmar army.

Instead of focusing on rhetoric and the President’s comment on “fake news” and possibly changing American libel laws, the Committee to Protect Journalists ought to have looked at authoritarian governments and how they treat their journalists.
