WASHINGTON — The wildfire northwest of Yosemite National Park will mostly likely spread into the park and could threaten a major reservoir, which supplies most of the water to San Francisco.
Reuters reports that the Rim Fire has burned over 160,000 acres of parkland, which happens to be larger than all of Chicago.
The wildfire came within a half mile of the Hetch Hetchy reservoir, which supplies 85% of the water used by 2.6 million San Francisco residents, in addition to several adjacent counties. Although ashes from the fire reached the reservoir surface, the water tested clean.
If the water is contaminated, it could be diverted to a smaller reservoir and filtered.
The wildfire has destroyed about 12 homes and threatens an additional 4,500 more.
