WASHINGTON — Barack Obama’s plans to close Guantanamo Bay may be coming to an abrupt halt due to recent events.
Reuters reports that the threats of terrorist attacks on Americans and foreign nationals may delay Obama’s planned closure of the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, where a good amount of Yemeni nationals are being held.
Yemen is a central focus point of al-Qaeda terrorist activity and has one of the most active and dangerous branches there, called the al-Qaeda of the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). Yemen’s government is pressing Obama to release the remaining Yemeni nationals that are being detained by the U.S. at the facility, but this newest threat will delay that process.
The hunger strikes by detainees grabbed international attention, but it is now ebbing as Islam’s holy month of Ramadan is coming to a close.
