WASHINGTON — The wife of imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Liu Xiaobo, has filed an appeal for a retrial for her husband. This comes as U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit China within a couple of weeks.
Reuters reported that China has jailed Liu since 2009 on subversion charges of organizing a petition to overthrow the Communist regime. Liu had also participated in the pro-democracy, anti-communist 1989 Tiananmen Square protests that were brutally crushed by the Chinese army.
His wife, Liu Xia, has been under house arrest since her husband won the Nobel Prize in 2010. She visited him in prison last month and got his approval to file the appeal.
