U.S. sued by woman involved in Petraeus affair scandal

WASHINGTON — Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned? Tampa socialite Jill Kelley and her husband are suing the U.S. government for wrongfully implicating her in an embarrassing scandal, according to Reuters [1].

jill kelley [2]Kelley allegedly exchanged embarrassing e-mails [3] with Gen. John Allen, who was in line to receive a big promotion to become the chief commander in Europe.

She had complained to the FBI about someone contacting her about an extramarital affair between David Petraeus, chief of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and an American general and his biographer Paula Broadwell. It started an FBI investigation that led to the discovery of the affair and the quick resignation of Petraeus [4]. Gen. Allen had been cleared of any wrongdoing, but also resigned.

Kelley is suing the FBI, Defense Department and other unnamed government officials for subjecting her to publicĀ “ridicule, moral opprobrium, scorn and derision”. In return, she asked for a formal apology issued by the government and officials in addition to damages.

She denied any relationship with Allen.
