WASHINGTON — U.S. Marines are en route to provide support and aid to the Philippines after super typhoon Haiyan decimated parts of the country southeast of the capital city of Manila.

philippines typhoon damageReuters reported that the devastation wiped out entire towns and could be over 10,000 dead and maybe six times that number will displaced for a long time.

Because of the magnitude of the typhoon, roads and other supply routes were wiped out. Towns were washed away and bodies scattered throughout the countryside. Some estimated that between 70-80% of structures were destroyed by the typhoon, similar to the devastating earthquake in Haiti several years ago.

So far, the international response has been overwhelming as organizations are sending help in forms of personnel and aid items.
