WASHINGTON — The top leader for Tunisia’s al-Qaeda terrorist offshoot, Ansar al-Sharia, was captured by joint American and Libyan forces earlier today.

Both governments did not respond to requests for confirmation if they helped capture the suspected terrorist.

Benahssine had fought in Afghanistan and had led the Tunisian group in its recent operations against the Tunisian government. His capture showed that the North African terrorist groups were more closely tied than previously thought.
