U.S. Court: Obama has to Hand Over Memos on Drone Strikes

WASHINGTON — A U.S. federal appeals court, the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals, has ruled against the Obama administration’s Department of Justice over their government memorandum.

drones [1]Reuters reported [2] that the department has been ordered to turn over parts of a memorandum that detailed and justified the Obama administration’s targeted drone strikes. The drone strikes were launched against individuals that were linked to terrorism, which includes American citizens.

The drone strikes were used to kill many suspected terrorists [3], including U.S. citizen and al-Qaeda mastermind Anwar al-Awlaki in a 2011 strike in Yemen. Yemen protested the policy and voted against the American policy in a symbolic vote [4].

The court said that the public’s right to know overrules executive power, which reversed a lower court’s ruling to prevent parts from being released. The rationale was that the government used portions of their memorandum to publicly support their strategy of drone strikes.
