Made in America? U.S. buys Russian helicopters for Afghan gov’t

WASHINGTON — Afghanistan’s military will be receiving Russian helicopters, bought by the U.S.

mi 17 helicopter [1]Reuters reports [2] that the Pentagon will spend $572 million to buy 30 Russian helicopters for Afghan security forces to use after NATO forces withdraw.

These Mi-17 helicopters will be requisitioned to the Afghan National Security Forces Special Mission Wing, which specializes in counter-narcotics, counter-terrorism and special operations. These helicopters should be ready by the end of 2014 for Afghan use.

This was not the first time that the Pentagon has bought Russian helicopters. They bought 12 helicopters for $217.7 million in 2012.
