WASHINGTON – In what is becoming a saddening and dangerous pattern, 2 Afghan policemen shot 7 other colleagues dead as they slept. Reuters reports that they had rejoined the police force after defecting to the Taliban.

afghan policeKandahar’s Afghan National Police chief Abdul Raziq said that the two men defected to the Taliban months ago but came back to beg to rejoin the police force. They were accepted back.

The two men shot their 7 sleeping colleagues dead and escaped, leading to a manhunt that started in the early hours of the morning. The men have most likely rejoined the Taliban, noted Raziq.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, through a text message, claimed Taliban’s responsibility for the attack and exaggerated the police losses. The Taliban have increased attacks in a time where they usually scale back their attacks during the winter.

The current chaos engulfing Afghanistan is worrisome for security analysts, who wonder what will happen to the country after the U.S. and NATO forces finally withdraw. Suicide bombings and insider attacks continue to raise their ugly head. Russia is so heavily concerned it is thinking of re-posting Russian border guards in neighboring Tajikistan.
