WASHINGTON — The upcoming elections in Afghanistan are under attack as Taliban militant attacked the Independent Election Commission (IEC) headquarters last week. The commission runs the election for Afghanistan’s next president.

AfghanistanReuters reported that the headquarters was attacked in the capital city of Kabul and was the third such attack in the capital. The elections will be held on April 5th.

The battle raged for at least four hours and trapped eight United Nations staffers inside the IEC building. Reports said that at least three suicide bombers were killed and no other casualties were immediately known.

This was a second attack on an IEC building the past week by the Taliban, and the prior attack killed one child. The other building saw its guesthouse stormed, where a U.S.-based aid group used as a base.

The attackers were wearing women’s burqas.
