WASHINGTON — After shelling on government army positions at the Donetsk airport, at least one Swiss Red Cross worker was killed when a shell exploded near the Red Cross building in the city.
Reuters reported that the Ukrainian government and the pro-Russia rebels blamed each other for the death.
The shell exploded, left a crater in the pavement close to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) building in the eastern Ukraine city. Laurent DuPasquier, an administrator in that office, was the victim. The director of the operations for ICRC, Dominik Stillhart, said, “Indiscriminate shelling of residential areas is unacceptable and violates humanitarian law.” The agency has safely moved their other employees in their Donetsk office to another location.
The situation is fragile, with a current ceasefire being tenuous after recent spats of violence between the pro-Russia rebels and the Ukrainian government.
