WASHINGTON — In the contentious North Caucasus region of Dagestan, a suicide bomber killed two people and injured up to 20 people outside a police station.
Reuters reported that the Dagestan Interior Ministry announced the casualties, which also included six police officers and one of which was in critical condition.
The culprit detonated a car bomb outside the police station.
Dagestan is within a troubled region where anti-Russian government sentiment is growing and where a significant amount of Islamist activity is rooted. The older brother of the Boston Marathon Bombers visited the general area before conducting his terrible work at this year’s Boston Marathon. Other troubled areas in the region are Ingushetia , where a top security official was assassinated this year, and Chechnya.
Russian police and security have cracked down on Islamist insurgents ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics, which is set to take place in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. Sochi is close enough to the troubled regions that Russia is doing whatever it can to limit any threat of terrorism.
