Russian Reset 2.0? Putin may Sock It to Obama at G-20 Summit

WASHINGTON — Looks like the U.S.’s Russian “reset” may not be beneficial to the U.S. after all. Rumor has it that Russian President Vladimir Putin is looking to even the score [1] with Obama over the Syrian civil war.

obama putin pose [2]Reuters reported [3] that some believe that Putin might try to turn the tables on Obama at the upcoming G-20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia later this week.

Obama had called Putin a “bored kid in the back of the classroom [4]” and called out Russia for not budging on supporting Syria [5] and the government regime led by Bashar al-Assad. After reports and videos of chemical attacks and victims went viral, Obama and his Secretary of State John Kerry indicated they will use U.S. military resources to intervene in the Syrian civil war.

Kerry gave a strongly-worded press conference last Friday, then Obama backtracked in his remarks on Saturday. A NBC poll indicated that 79% of Americans want Congress’s approval for the U.S. to go to war, unlike in Libya where Obama intervened without congressional approval.

Putin may be sensing that Obama is under a lot more political pressure to go into Syria, especially after Obama called the use of chemical weapons [6] by the Assad regime a “red line [7]” and would push the U.S. into siding with the anti-Assad rebels, which have anti-American Islamist and al-Qaeda elements.

Putin had already mocked Obama and the U.S. by housing National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden [8] under temporary asylum [9].
