Russia wants to jail Navalny, Putin’s main foe

WASHINGTON — After pro-European Union protesters in Ukraine helped unseat and push out a pro-Russian Ukrainian president, Russia may clamp down on any Putin opponents.

alexei navalny [1]Reuters reported [2] that Alexei Navalny may face house arrest if Russian investigators’ petition is approved by a court. Navalny was recently released from prison [3] after being imprisoned for graft and corruption [4], charges he claims were trumped up by Putin.

Navalny surprised some when he ran in a Moscow mayoral race and placed second. But, he protested his electoral loss [5] to a Putin ally and was eventually arrested for corruption.

The reason behind the request for a house arrest was that investigators claimed Navalny left the country when he was not supposed to.
