WASHINGTON — Russia is preparing at least one special security unit to fight Islamist terrorists that are returning home to Russia.

dagestan militantsReuters reported that the Russians are worried that when the Syrian civil war dies down, these Russian Islamists will return home and fight the Russian government in volatile regions such as Ingushetia, Chechnya and Dagestan.

The Boston Marathon Bombers, the Tsarnaev brothers, came from that troubled region.

Russia is already combating Islamist elements in those regions and fear a surge of Islamist militants in the region when the Syrian civil war bogs down as peace talks begin within the next year. A top Russian official in the region was killed in a drive-by shooting this year and Russian security forces have killed several militants in its operations.

Some say that at least 400 Russians are fighting with al-Qaeda elements in Syria, but the Russian government thinks that number is far too low.
