WASHINGTON — Romania, which has been an European Union member since 2007, saw protests erupt in the capital city of Bucharest over a bill that would shield corrupt members of parliament.
Reuters reported that the bill creates immunity for parliament members in Romania if corruption charges are brought up.
The Romanian president, opposition parties, Western diplomats and pro-democracy activists condemned the move as one that undermined the rule of law in their country. Hundreds flooded the streets of Bucharest and called out the parliamentary politicians as corrupt and running from the law.
