WASHINGTON — Libertarian Republican and U.S. Senator from Kentucky, Rand Paul, said that the former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden should get a light prison sentence if he returns home from Russia.
Reuters reported that Paul told ABC’s “The Week” that Snowden does not deserve a death penalty or life in prison sentence as some suggested.
Snowden’s leaks rattled both Americans at home and allies abroad as he exposed an extensive surveillance program by American intelligence. But, he did break national security protocol, which merits tough punishment in the eyes of many.
Paul has been one of the most outspoken critics of the NSA’s activities in addition to Obama’s drone war in foreign countries.
