WASHINGTON — In one of the oddest international incidents, accusations are flying that the Russian president stole a Super Bowl ring from a NFL owner.
Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, said that Russian President Vladimir Putin stole his New England Patriots Super Bowl ring during a meeting. Reuters reports that Putin denies such a claim.
Putin has been called a thief at street protests, and this adds more fuel to the fire. Yet, Putin and his supporters deny Kraft’s claim that Putin stole the ring and said it was a gift. Kraft said that he merely intended to show Putin the ring, worth over $25,000. Putin took it out of Kraft’s hand and put it in his pocket.
Kraft recounted the encounter eight years ago, saying that “I put my hand out and he put it in his pocket, and three KGB guys got around him and walked out”.
President George W. Bush told Kraft to let it be and that it would be good for U.S.-Russian relations.
