WASHINGTON — A United Nations chemical weapons investigative team has landed in Turkey to investigate claims about Syria’s use of chemical weapons on rebels and civilians.
Reuters reports that the team, headed by Swedish scientist Ake Sellstrom, entered Turkey after waiting for weeks on the island of Cyprus for permission. Blocked from entering Syria, the team will gather information from sources in Turkey and survivors.
The U.S. and its Western allies in the European Union have alleged that the Syrian government, led by Bashar al-Assad, used chemical weapons on the rebels. U.S. President Barack Obama waffled on deciding whether to arm the Islamist Syrian rebels until reaching a decision two weeks ago.
Assad has denied such claims and continues to fight the rebels with the help of the Iran-backed and Lebanon-based terrorist group Hezbollah.
Hezbollah has officially entered the civil war and is causing further instability within Lebanon, leading to pleas of peace and reason within Lebanese political circles.
At least 90,000 people have been killed in the two-year-old civil war and shows no sign of lessening.
