WASHINGTON — The downgrading of American military might continues under the Obama administration. This time, Obama’s Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said that military power is no longer reliable or practical.
Reuters reported that Hagel told a D.C. think tank, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, that Americans cannot “fall prey to the false notion of American decline” but must avoid foreign wars and conflicts.
In his remarks, Hagel said, “No other nation has the will, the power, the capacity, the capability and the network of alliances to lead the international community … However, sustaining our leadership will increasingly depend not only on the extent of our great power, but an appreciation of its limits and a wise deployment of our influence”.
Obama’s push for “soft power”, or diplomatic or political influence, has resulted in abject failure. Civil war erupted in Syria and Russia stole the show from Obama, when Obama backed down from his “red line“. Also, Iran is flexing its muscle in the Middle East while building up nuclear weapons capabilities, while Iraq is descending into a civil war. China is building up its military while the Japanese, Koreans, Filipinos and Vietnamese are grasping for straws to find a counterweight.
