WASHINGTON — Obama’s Asian “pivot” is yet another failure in Obama’s presidency as China is filling in the void left open by the lack of assertive American leadership.
Reuters reported that former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s statement of “We are back to stay” does not ring true two years later.
The planned deployment of 2,500 U.S. Marines in northern Australia has yet to occur, as there is not one single Marine in the northern Australian city of Darwin. Two hundred Marines finished their six-month tour in Australia and won’t be replaced until 2014 when 1,150 Marines arrive.
As a result, China continues to go about its business almost unchecked by the U.S. It currently is disputing the possession of several island chains in the Pacific Ocean with Vietnam, the Philippines and Japan for mineral resources and is bristling at any American attempt to use India or Vietnam as a counter-weight to Chinese influence.
It seems this pivot, like Obama’s countless pivots to the U.S. economy and other issues, is another lackluster effort in Obama’s presidency.
