NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio will scale back Welfare Reform

WASHINGTON — Bill de Blasio, who was elected mayor to succeed Michael Bloomberg, will do away with welfare reform put into place by Rudy Giuliani.

Bill De Blasio [1]Fox News reported [2] de Blasio will no longer tie welfare benefits to work, undoing decades of progress under former mayor Rudy Giuliani (and de Blasio’s predecessor Michael Bloomberg).

Welfare recipients no longer have to work to receive welfare benefits, but will be in training programs and internship-type programs. Opponents called the welfare reform rules “punitive,” while supporters say the “workforce” laws benefit the poor.

de Blasio said his reforms will help prepare recipients transition to long-term jobs instead of keeping welfare recipients in certain jobs.
