New Jersey’s Cory Booker anointed Senator by Media

WASHINGTON — Cory Booker, the Democratic Party’s rising star [1] (according to news media outlets), has been anointed New Jersey’s next U.S. Senator by…the liberal mainstream media.

*Apr 11 - 00:05* [2]Reuters reported [3] that Booker, who is active on Twitter [4] and serves as Newark’s mayor, had at least 60% of the votes to win the Democratic senatorial nomination.

The seat was vacated after the death of Frank Lautenberg [5], who was struggling with health issues. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie called for a primary election to be held in mid-August and a general election on October 16th. Democrats were upset because it means that Christie, who is running for re-election, will not have to face Booker on the same ballot.

It was a smart political move as the election took place during the summer vacation season, and voter turnout was down.

Other contenders for the Democratic Party nomination were Frank Pallone, a Congressman, Rush Holt  (also a Congressman) and state Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver.

Booker’s notoriety comes from his social media reach and several public exploits, such as rescuing a woman from a burning building. But, he has neglected Newark while becoming a national figure, something that Newark voters and local politicians do not hesitate to point out.

His Republican opponent will be former mayor of Bogota, Steve Lonegan, who easily beat his primary opponent with 80% of the vote.
