WASHINGTON — Netflix announced last Monday that it reached a deal on new TV shows with DreamWorks Animation.

netflix dreamworksReuters reports that this will start in 2014 and is the company’s first major transaction in its foray to produce original, first-run content. It could result in more than 300 hours of new TV episodes and programming for Netflix viewers and subscribers.

The financial details were not announced or disclosed, but could be worth several hundred million dollars over the course of the contract. This is a major development for Netflix, especially after its competitor Amazon bought rights to popular cartoon shows like Dora the Explorer and Spongebob Squarepants less than a month ago.
