WASHINGTON — Two explosions rocked the Iranian embassy in Lebanon this past Tuesday and killed at least 23 people.

lebanon suicide bombingReuters reported that among the deaths was an Iranian cultural attache. The double suicide attack in southern Beirut caused not only chaos and death, but flipped bodies, car and debris onto the other side of the street.

An al-Qaeda affiliate based in Lebanon, Abdullah Azzam Brigades, claimed responsibility for the attacks and was related to Iranian involvement in both Lebanon and in the neighboring Syrian civil war.

The first bomb was a man with an explosive belt running toward the outer wall of the embassy and the second bomb was a car bomb a couple buildings away.

The Syrian civil war pits Shi’a Iran and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad against the Sunni Muslim rebels and Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
